SSS Professional
Development Day 2011
The New England Educational Opportunity Association (NEOA) and the University of New Hampshire Student Support Services program invite you to join your SSS colleagues in New England for our fifteenth annual day of dialogue, sharing, and professional growth.
The day’s format will include morning and afternoon workshop sessions. Workshop descriptions are posted below and the registration form is on-line. Each workshop will have facilitators/presenters whose role is to guide the topic discussion and engage participants in sharing experiences, materials, and ideas. It is always valuable if participants come prepared to contribute information and ideas to further an informed discussion around the selected workshop topics.
As usual, we will have a community welcome activity at 10:00 am to start our day!
Plan to arrive at the Elliott Alumni Center on Thursday, Nov. 10 between 8:30 am and 10:00 am for check-in, etc.
Formal activities will run 10:00 am - 3:00 pm, but many arrive before 10:00 am to catch up with SSS colleagues.

CONNECTING with ALUMNI & MARKETING YOUR PROGRAM - USING SOCIAL MEDIA:
We've invited two media-savvy professionals to describe and demonstrate their successes with social media to build effective networks, reach out to students and alumni, and market their programs. Dawn Zitney is the Media Outreach Coordinator for SHARPP at UNH; Megan Hales is the UNH Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Young Alumni Programs and has built on her years in career services to create an extensive network of young alumni and current students. Dawn and Megan will share their skills and perspectives on how they use a variety of social media and technology tools, but we'll also want ideas from participants about their best practices. Bring your laptops and iPads!

BEST PRACTICES - TWO-YEAR PROGRAMS:
Your topics suggested for this year include looking at low-cost & no-cost staffing practices, effective peer mentoring & coaching programs, fundraising & alumni development, supporting students from diverse backgrounds, working with students in STEM disciplines, innovative professional development practices, implementing a first-year experience/course, ongoing efforts at finanical literacy and sources of financial aid, peer evaluation of programs, what works (and doesn't work) in tutoring, updates from the COE conference, use of lending libraries, and many good thoughts about hanging together during challenging times!
