The Center for Academic Resources and its predecessor, the TASk Center, grew from the University's initial Student Support Services (SSS) grant funded through the US Department of Education in 1974. From 1974-1981, SSS functioned as a stand-alone program, providing academic support to students from limited income backgrounds. Based on the success of SSS in these early years, the TASk (Training in Academic Skills) Center began as a pilot program in 1979. For two years these programs ran in parallel out of different campus locations. In 1981, both programs were reorganized in a common location under the TASk name and a single administrative structure.
In 1993, TASk was renamed as the Center for Academic Resources to portray more accurately our mission and breadth of student support offerings. All along, the University has continued its commitment to students from limited-income families, first generation college students, and students with disabilities through pursuing SSS grant funding: our latest SSS grant ranked in the top 10% nationally, results in funding from the US Department of Education for 2002 - 2006. Another grant was then awarded for 2007 - 2010. Based on these grants, SSS will continue to be a major service component of the Center.
The Center for Academic Resources invites the University community to share in our experience and success in helping undergraduates achieve their academic goals.
